Cities and regions are correct and well-intentioned to formally recognize those in the community that are doing good work – Philadelphia for some years, Dallas, now Northeast Indiana. The “101 Connectors” concept is gaining traction. However, often those who already maintain a high profile in the community, whose job it is to make connections, and even those who work for the local leadership programs are singled out. This is logical and the easiest path to take. These individuals are to be commended and encouraged to keep contributing, even though it may be their professional choice or obligation to do so. Fortunately, we observe throughout the country far more than 101 people in communities of all sizes that engage in their daily work to create change for the better– whether paid or on a volunteer basis. These are the individuals from myriad backgrounds and cultures who may never be recognized. Further, they are not motivated by the desire to be singled out for what they believe is just doing the right thing. They are the foundation of every community, and their work often makes it possible for “101 Connectors” to be identified. Communities and regions have much work to do to engage these people in the visioning process – to be more inclusive.
